AKIPRESS.COM - There was double joy for China at the Ashgabat 2017 Weightlifting Arena as Shi Danhui and Yuan Chengfei claimed Combined gold in the Women’s 69kg and men’s 77kg, respectively, at the Senior Asian Weightlifting Championships in Ashgabat on Wednesday.
Home favourite Rejepbay Rejepov (TKM) got the crowd going wild when he won Combined silver in the men’s event, Laurel press service said.
Women’s 69kg
Shi Danhui (CHN) had to sit through two nerve-wrecking attempts by her rivals before she was sure of the Combined gold in the women’s 69kg. The 25-year-old had won the Snatch event with 107kg, before lifting 126 kg in her first Clean & Jerk attempt. In her final two attempts, Shi was not able to push 130kg above her head.
Kim Suhyeon (KOR), who took the Snatch bronze with 100kg, did lift 130kg and had one attempt to lift 134kg for Combined gold, but the weight proved to be a little too much. However, the 22-year-old Korean took the Clean & Jerk gold, the Combined silver and the Snatch bronze.
Hung Wan-Ting (TPE) could have taken the Clean & Jerk and the combined gold with 131kg in her final attempt, but she did not have enough left in the tank for a stable lift. She went home with silver in Snatch, and bronzes in Clean & Jerk and Combined.
Shi was relieved to win after the tense wait: “I felt a little unconfident, because I did not perform very well today. I was afraid that they would outlift me.
“I was not in the best of shape because I had several competitions back home to qualify and I suffered an injury before these Championships. It was also difficult to accommodate to the weather and the food in this country, but I really like Turkmenistan. The city [Ashgabat] is really clean and the people are very friendly.”

Men’s 77kg
After claiming three silvers in the World Junior Championships and a silver in last year’s Asian Championships, Yuan Chengfei (CHN) finally took the most precious of all medals when he grabbed Snatch, Clean & Jerk and Combined gold in the Men’s 77kg. With 160kg in Snatch and 195kg in Clean & Jerk, he lifted 12kg more than home favourite Rejepbay Rejepov (TKM), who took Combined silver with a total of 343kg.
Kim Woo Jae (KOR) completed the podium with 340kg, taking all three bronze medals. Aidar Kazov (KAZ) went home with the Clean & Jerk silver after lifting 186kg.
Champion Yuan was happy to finish on top: “I competed many times, I won silver in Kosice, Kazan, Wroclaw and Tashkent, now I won the gold, finally. I can only think fond of Turkmenistan.”
Rejepov praised the home crowd: “The spectators were the force behind the wheel. I didn’t expect to experience such support. The venue is fantastic, we are lucky to have facilities like this one, thanks to our honourable President.
“Winning medals in this competition was something I was expecting, but I feel I could have done it better in the Clean & Jerk, probably 190 or 192kg. I will keep on working hard and I trust I will win more medals in September.”
