Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia Munkh-Orgil Tsend paid an official visit to the United States on June 12-14.

During the visit, the Foreign Minister held talks with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, White House National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster, Chairman of the House Democracy Partnership of the US House of Representatives Mr Peter Roskam, heads of the Millennium Challenge Corporation and the Peace Corps.

Munkh-Orgil attended the Fourth U.S. Trade Mission and the Investors’ Roundtable meeting, organized by the American Chamber of Commerce Mongolia.

In a meeting with McMaster, Minister Ts.Munkh-Orgil expressed his willingness to strengthen the comprehensive partnership with the United States, one of the Mongolia’s important neighbors, and make concrete steps in expanding bilateral economic and trade cooperation, as well as increasing investment.

Both sides have underlined that the peacekeepers of two nations have been working together to provide the regional, as well as global security, and stability. Mongolia confirmed its continued participation at the “Resolute support” mission in Afghanistan.

McMaster highly valued Mongolia’s contribution and efforts towards the peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan and global arena, and expressed gratitude for the decision to continue the participation at the “Resolute support” mission. Moreover, he stressed that while strengthening the friendly relations between Mongolia and the United States, and stimulating the political and defense cooperation, expanding of bilateral trade and investment; and deepening the cultural, educational, as well as people-to-people ties will play an important role in the bilateral relations.

Mr. Altangerel Bulgaa, Ambassador of Mongolia to the U.S., H.E. Mrs. Jennifer Zimdahl Galt, US Ambassador to Mongolia, and Mr. Matthew Pottinger, Asian Affairs Senior Director of the National Security Council were in attendance.

In a meeting with Mrs. Sheila Crowley, Acting Director of the Peace Corps, the sides exchanged views on cooperation.

Minister Ts.Munkh-Orgil expressed gratitude to the Peace Corps for sending its volunteers to Mongolia for the last 25 years and underlined the important contribution that these volunteers made towards the social development of Mongolia, including education and health.

Mrs. Sheila Crowley expressed her gratitude to the Government of Mongolia for close cooperation and support provided to the Peace Corps volunteers and indicated that upon the request by the Mongolian side, the Peace Corps is launching a project to support volunteering in Mongolia. Through the project, the Peace Corps will share its volunteering experience with the Mongolian Government. The two sides will collaborate in creating environment for participation in volunteering process.

An experienced volunteer, who previously worked in Mongolia, will undertake necessary researches and design the program, based on exclusive demand in Mongolia. The two sides agreed to cooperate towards the possibility of sharing the experience of American local volunteering through NGOs, such as the AmeriCorps.

In 2016, the Peace Corps commemorated the 25th anniversary of the arrival of its first volunteers in Mongolia. Since that time, over 1200 volunteers worked in every corner of Mongolia.

The Peace Corps sends the best and brightest Americans abroad on behalf of the United States to tackle the most pressing needs of people around the world.  Since President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps in 1961, nearly 220,000 American volunteers worked in 140 countries worldwide.
