AKIPRESS.COM - Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has been sentenced to six years in jail for his role in the Holyland corruption case.

Ten individuals have been convicted in the process which involves bribery connected to the development of a controversial residential project in Jerusalem.

Olmert pocketed 105,000 euros while mayor of the city. He is set to appeal. His lawyer Eli Zohar confirmed that Olmert will take the case to a higher court saying he is innocent, AP told. 

Olmert has also been fined the equivalent of 210,000 euros and banned from public office. Prosecution lawyer Liat Ben-Ali said that "the court has spoken, read the words and take them on board. Whoever accepts bribes, whoever gives bribes is corrupt. And whoever is corrupt goes to jail for a long time.”

The 68-year-old has to report to jail on September 1 allowing time for his legal team to lodge an appeal. Judge David Rozen described his crime as “noxious.”

Olmert served as prime minister from 2006 to 2009 when he resigned as corruption allegations emerged.
