The faulty ignition switch that has forced General Motors to recall another 3.4 million cars, the company announced Monday.
The recall centers on an ignition flaw that could result in the key’s slipping out of the “run” position, shutting down vehicle electronics necessary for vehicle operation, the Digital Journal said.
The problem is exacerbated if the key ring is laden with extras that add weight and the cars encounter a jostle, such as driving over potholes or train tracks. If that perfect storm is created, the vehicle will shut down, resulting in increased steering and braking effort requirements of the driver.
The airbag deployment system would shut down, as would most other electrical functions.
The initial recall covered nearly the entire GM compact car spectrum, with names such as Chevrolet Cobalt and HHR, Pontiac Pursuit/G5 and Solstice, and Saturn Ion and Sky.
It covered about 2.6 million cars. GM says that recall made the company review ignition issues and resulted in the recall of the additional vehicles.
