An Idaho Army National Guard Apache helicopter crashed just outside the Boise city limits Thursday night, a Guard spokesman told NBC News.
The status of the two crew members on board wasn't immediately known.
The helicopter went down about two miles south of Gowen Field, where the Guard's 1st Battalion, 183rd Aviation Regiment, is based, and about 2½ miles south of Boise Airport, the Ada County Sheriff's Office said. The 183rd flies both AH-64 Apache attack helicopters and UH-60 Blackhawk utility aircraft.
No other details were immediately available. News crews were being kept away from the immediate scene, and the Guard was in charge of the investigation, the sheriff's office said.
It was the second U.S. military air crash of the day. Rescue crews were searching for an Air Force F-16 fighter jet that crashed in the Gulf of Mexico early Thursday. The body of the pilot — the only person on board — was recovered in the Gulf, said Col. Derek France of the 325th Fighter Wing.
