At least 5 people were killed in a passenger train derailment in Philadelphia, U.S., city mayor Michael Nutter said.
An Amtrak passenger train 188 from Washington, D.C., to New York City was derailed near Philadelphia on Tuesday night, several people were injured, including 6 who were seriously hurt, as seven cars of the train were derailed, Nutter said.
Nutter said seven of the 10 cars on the Amtrak Regional 188, including the engine, "are in various stages of disarray" after derailing. The train was due to arrive at New York's Penn Station at about 10:30 p.m., officials said. There is currently no Amtrak train service at Penn Station as a result of the crash.
There were 243 people on board the train, including five crew members, Nutter said at a news conference late Tuesday night. Among the injured, six are in critical condition; a total of 53 others were transported to local hospitals, according to the fire chief.
