From now on only two packs of cigarettes and one liter of alcoholic beverages can be imported by the Turkmen citizens and the foreigners entering the country, according to the Chronicles of Turkmenistan.
In May, the passengers were allowed to bring a block of cigarettes (10 packs) and 5 liters of alcoholic beverages. Travelers used to purchase this merchandise in duty free shops of international airports, in particular in Istanbul and could import it unhampered to Turkmenistan.
This was also an additional source of income for those who were engaged in importing small batches of goods from abroad.
No preliminary announcements and warning about the upcoming restrictions had been made at Ashgabat airport. Several days after the regulation was introduced, all merchandise exceeding the allowance was confiscated from those who imported a previously permitted block of cigarettes and five liters of alcohol. Up to now not all passengers are aware of new regulations and customs officers confiscate “a surplus”.
As a result, prices for cigarettes have increased in Turkmenistan. A pack, which used to cost 20 manats ($5.70), is now sold at 24 manats ($6.85).
