Kyrgyzstan might reduce number of jurors from 9 to 2

AKIPRESS.COM - legal system-justice-court Kyrgyzstan is offered to reduce the number of jurors from 9 to 2, according to a meeting of the Council on Judicial Reform under the President on March 14.

Bill amending the law on jurors in courts has been introduced by Member of the Council on Judicial Reform Kalyi Esenkanov. He noted that the system had enough time to test efficiency of the law on jurors since its adoption but lacks adequate funding.

“In this regard, we offer amendments to the law which would require less funding... The proposed jury court would participate in taking the final decision along with a professional judge as opposed to trial by jury, which makes a verdict of defendant's guilt or innocence by itself,” Esenkanov explained.

The bill would also define the jurisdiction of local courts which deal with criminal probes involving jurors; regulate court proceedings with participation of jurors; determine the order of formation of preliminary composition of jurors.
