Volcano erupts near Mexico City, locals warned of debris exploding out of crater

AKIPRESS.COM - A huge volcano in Mexico began to erupt sending plumes of ash and smoke up to 6,500 feet into the air, according to Daily Mail.

The Popocatepetl Volcano in central Mexico, began erupting yesterday morning and a series of CCTV cameras captured the explosions.

The footage shows black smoke pouring out of the top of the peak and lava can also be seen exploding down to the ground.

Officials have set up a a seven-and-a-half mile cordon around the volcano as a precaution to stop people going to close.

They have also warned anybody getting too close runs the risk of being hit with falling debris.

Local people have also encouraged those living nearby to use a moist towel to cover their noses and mouths while outside so they don't inhale any ash.

Flights in and out of the nearest airport in Puebla are currently running to time.

However, a warning has been issued to pilots warning them to take care in the area.

Popocatepetl is 43 miles south east of Mexico City and is one of the Mexico's 14 active volcanoes.

In its last eruption in 2014, plumes of smoke and ash combined with low cloud cover caused chaos at local airports as flights had to be canceled or diverted.

The last major eruption came in 2000 when 40,000 people had to be evacuated from nearby areas on the advice of government scientists.
