Social Services Minister of Australia Christian Porter says the government has resettled more than 180 refugees as part of the Coalition's one-off intake of people displaced by violence in Syria and Iraq, ABC said.
But Porter has ruled out the government taking on any further refugees past the intake of 12,000 people announced last year by former prime minister Tony Abbott.
He said 187 refugees had now been resettled in Australia and an additional 1,600 visas had been issued overseas with imminent arrivals expected.
"It has taken some time and I acknowledge that it has been slower than we had anticipated, but you will find that this speeds up now," he said.
The government has come under fire for its lengthy process, with comparisons made to Canada which had resettled more than 26,000 refugees as of last month.
But Porter said the government was not embarrassed by the comparison, citing Australia's stringent security measures.
"I don't use Canada as a benchmark. The procedure that Canada engaged in is very different from the procedure that we're engaged in and, if I might say, significantly less cautious and thorough than our procedure," he said.
