Panama Papers: Some Mongolians spotted

AKIPRESS.COM - panamapapers In the past few days, Mongolian and international social media and news are reporting about leaked documents on financial accounts' information for more than 214 thousand offshore entities. Around 3 am last night, The International Consortium Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) released the list of names with hidden offshore accounts not known to legal authorities, GoGo reports.

The leaked documents were created by a Panamanian law firm and corporate service provider Mossack Fonsenca. Included in the released list, 49 names were linked to Mongolia. Those names include some former and current government officials, and businesspeople of Mongolia.

Former Minister of Construction and Urban Development Damdin Tsogtbaatar and former Prime Minister of Mongolia Sukhbaatar Batbold called a press conference to make an official statements regarding the matter. The two claimed they conducted legal business in the past where they had bought shares and sold them in 2005 and left the whole thing behind. Both individuals stated they have done everything in the legal framework like any other business.

Despite all accusations, Tsogtbaatar and Batbold names were not on the list.

Former sumo wrestler and MP Davaa Batbayar, Petrovis CEO Janchiv Oyungerel and son of the Ulaanbaatar mayor Bat-Uul Chuluudai are few of the names that had been revealed.

Batbayar later made statement, saying: "There must have been a mistake. I have never owned hidden offshore account. I only had legal accounts in Mongolia and Japan. And I am not one of those billionaires born from government. In the past I have earned what I have today with my own hard work through wrestling and some businesses."
