Nine detained after Chinese power plant collapse kills 74

AKIPRESS.COM - 8055426-3x2-940x627 Chinese police have formally detained nine people involved in a power plant construction project in the east of the country, which collapsed killing 74 people, according to ABC.

The accident happened on Thursday morning in Fengcheng, Jiangxi province, during work on a cooling tower for a coal-fired power plant.

A tower crane collapsed, triggering the collapse of the entire construction platform.

The nine included the chairman of Hebei Yineng Tower Engineering, whose family name they gave as Zhang.

State media said the company was in charge of the building project.

The nine were suspected of "major liability" in the accident and would face criminal charges.

State media said last week 13 people had been taken into custody in connection with the disaster but did not say what had happened to the other four.
