US Ambassador congratulates Kyrgyzstan on its most positive Human Rights Report

AKIPRESS.COM - On April 16, the U.S. Department of State released the 2018 Kyrgyz Republic Human Rights Report.

This year the report highlights significant achievements by the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic and civil society in the human rights sphere.

This year’s report recognizes the strides made on a number of human rights related issues in the Kyrgyz Republic, including: the improving media environment under President Jeenbekov; relatively open access to the internet; establishment by the Kyrgyz government of strong torture monitoring bodies to reduce the use of torture now and prevent torture in the future; continued support by the Kyrgyz government of academic freedom; respect by the Kyrgyz government for freedom of peaceful assembly and freedom of association; conduct of competitive elections by the Kyrgyz government; and the participation of women and minorities in the political process.

U.S. Ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic, Donald Lu, said, “We congratulate the Kyrgyz Republic on its most positive Human Rights Report in the past five years. As the Kyrgyz Republic continues to make progress respecting human rights and advancing democratic values, its international partners are committed to providing steadfast support.”

U.S. Department of State Human Rights Reports document the status of human rights and worker rights in nearly 200 countries and territories. They are required by U.S. law and are used by a variety of actors, including the U.S. Congress, the Executive branch, and the Judicial branch as a factual resource for decision making in matters ranging from assistance to asylum. The Department of State uses a variety of sources for the Human Rights Report, including host governments, NGOs, subject matter experts, and press reports.

The State Department compiles these reports as a tool to assist other governments and civil society activists as they reflect on the human rights situation in their respective countries, reinforcing the importance of promoting individual rights and inclusion for all on a global basis.
