UNICEF Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia visits Kyrgyzstan

AKIPRESS.COM - UNICEF Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia, Ms. Afshan Khan, started her official visit to Kyrgyzstan today. The visit, which will last until tomorrow is Ms. Khan’s second to the country in her current capacity.

Over the next two days, Ms. Khan will meet key government partners to discuss the implementation of the Country Programme of Cooperation between the Government of Kyrgyzstan and UNICEF. Discussions will focus on emerging priorities and key aspects of the realization of children’s rights in the country, such as child poverty, the situation of children and adolescents with disabilities, parenting, digital learning opportunities, as well skills building to support young people and adolescents in the transition to the job market and towards active citizenship.

During her visit, Ms. Khan will also participate in a number of events, including the launch of digital initiatives such as the mobile parenting app “Bebbo” and the “Learning Passport”, together with the Minister of Education and Science, as well as a disaster simulation exercise conducted by UNICEF volunteers as part of the safe school programme. Furthermore, she will meet with participants of the “Girls in Science” project.

Ms. Khan has been an international public servant for over 30 years. Previously, she was the Director of Emergency Programmes for UNICEF, and she has also held other senior positions, including Director of Public-Sector Alliances and Resource Mobilization, Associate Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa, and UNICEF Representative in Jamaica.
