Number of livestock in Mongolia reaches 64.7 million

AKIPRESS.COM - Mongolia had 64.7 million head of livestock by the end of 2023, according to the preliminary annual livestock census. 29.4 million of them were sheep, 24.6 million goats, 4.8 million horses, 547 million cattle, and 473,900 camels, Montsame reports.

The total number of livestock decreased by 6.4 million (9.1%) compared to last year, reported the National Statistics Office. The number of goats decreased by 3 million, sheep by 3.3 million (6.9%), and cattle by 162.1, while the number of horses increased by 8,600, and camels by 3,400.

In terms of flocks of livestock, sheep account for 45.5% of the total number of livestock, goats for 38.1%, cattle for 8.3%, horses for 7.5% and camels for 0.7%.

Arkhangai province leads the country with its number of horses and cattle, while Omnogovi province leads with camels, Khuvsgul province with sheep and Bayankhongor province with goats.

The highest number of livestock was counted in Khuvsgul (5.7 million), followed by Tuv (4.9 million), Arkhangai (4.8 million), Ovorkhangai (4.7 million) and Khentii (4.4 million) in 2023.
