AKIPRESS.COM - The first case of human infection with avian influenza A(H5N2) virus was confirmed in Mexico. A 59-year-old resident of Mexico State was hospitalized and diagnosed with the virus, the WHO reportsjavascript:mctmp(0);.

The man died on April 24. He had no history of exposure to poultry or other animals.

"On April 17, the case developed fever, shortness of breath, diarrhoea, nausea and general malaise. On April 24, the case sought medical attention, was hospitalized at the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases "Ismael Cosio Villegas" and died the same day due to complications of his condition," the report notes.

WHO assessed the current risk to the general population posed by this virus as low. In March 2024, a high pathogenicity avian influenza A(H5N2) outbreak was detected in a backyard poultry farm in the state of Michoacán, which borders the State of Mexico where the case was residing.

Avian influenza H5N1 is spreading among dairy cows in the United States, with nearly 5 million vaccine doses being prepared for possible use in humans.
