WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange released from British maximum security prison

AKIPRESS.COM - The High Court in London has granted bail to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who has been in Belmarsh Prison in London since 2019. He went to Australia, where his wife and children are, WikiLeaks representatives said.

The organization confirmed the conclusion of the journalist’s deal with the US Attorney’s Office.

“This is the result of a global campaign involving press freedom advocates, lawmakers and leaders from across the political spectrum, right up to the UN. This created the conditions for lengthy negotiations with the US Department of Justice, which led to a deal that has not yet been officially completed. We will provide additional information as soon as possible,” WikiLeaks said in a post on social network X.

As part of a deal with the US prosecutor's office, Julian Assange partially admits guilt to conspiracy to obtain and disclose information on national defense - one count of 18 charges. At a US court hearing on June 26, at the request of the prosecutor's office, he is expected to be sentenced 62 months in prison. In accordance with the deal, the journalist will receive credit for five years spent in a London prison.
