UN Secretary-General opens new UN office in Ashgabat

AKIPRESS.COM - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres visited Ashgabat. He was met by the national leader, Chairman of People's Council Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov in Ashgabat Airport upon arrival.

Having noted effectiveness of relations with international organizations and structural units of the UN, Chairman of the People's Council Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov expressed his sincere gratitude to Antonio Guterres for support of constructive initiatives of Turkmenistan, aimed at establishing and maintaining a climate of mutual understanding and trust on the planet.

In turn, the UN Secretary General emphasized that he would like to visit Ashgabat again. He said the UN sees Turkmenistan as a reliable and responsible partner and is interested in further development of established fruitful cooperation that meets the goals of general well-being and progress.

Noting with satisfaction that the strategic partnership covers a wide range of areas - socio-economic and legal spheres, humanitarian sphere, education, health care, ecology and a number of others - the Chairman of the People's Council and the UN Secretary-General confirmed their readiness for progressive development of effective relations.

On the same day, António Guterres took part in the opening ceremony of the new building of the UN office in Ashgabat. The ceremony was also attended by heads of ministries and departments of the country, rectors of universities, heads and staff of the UN mission in Turkmenistan, as well as mass media. During the ceremony, the UN Secretary-Generalconfidence that cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UN will continue to develop dynamically in all priority areas.
