
AKIPRESS.COM - More than 2,000 athletes from 89 countries will take part in the 5th World Nomad Games, scheduled to be held in the capital of Kazakhstan, Astana, from September 8 to 13.
Athletes from Brunei, Liberia, Venezuela, Ireland, the Dominican Republic, Gambia, Peru, Ethiopia, and Burundi will participate in the Games for the first time, Sports and Tourism Minister Ermek Marzhikpayev told EFE.
The event would feature 21 sports disciplines, including horse racing, wrestling, traditional intellectual games, martial arts competitions, traditional archery, and national bird hunting, with a total of 97 medals up for grabs.
"The World Nomad Games aims to revive and preserve the cultural traditions of nomadic civilizations through competitive sports, because they are deeply rooted in the nomadic way of life. Initiated by Kyrgyzstan in 2014, the World Nomad Games have grown to become an international event celebrated by numerous countries. The Games are not just a sports competition but a cultural festival that brings together participants and spectators to celebrate and learn about nomadic traditions," Minister Marzhikpayev noted.
The Kazakh authorities, hosting the tournament for the first time, plan to elevate it "to the level of the Olympic Games", the Minister added.
The organizers plan to broadcast the 5th edition of the Nomad Games to viewers worldwide and are finalizing negotiations with several international networks. The live broadcast will also be available on the Kazakh sports television channel Qazsport, whose signal reaches all participating countries.
Kazakh authorities hope the competition will attract many tourists interested in nomadic culture.
The Games will conclude with a solo concert by the famous Kazakh singer, Dimash Kudaibergen. This concert is anticipated to be a highlight for both participants and spectators, celebrating the successful conclusion of the Games.
