AKIPRESS.COM - 64% of deaths of children under the age of 5 in Mongolia are infant mortality, 71.6% of which occurred in the newborn period, Montsame reports.

The infant mortality rate in Mongolia is lower than the world average, but it is still higher than the regional average. The mortality rate has not decreased notably in recent years. As of 2023, out of 64,306 live births, 496 died, most of which were premature.

The Ministry of Health established a leadership team in charge of reducing infant mortality and increasing the average life expectancy of Mongolians. The leadership team convened to discuss the national plan.

According to the research conducted by the members of the national team in collaboration with professors from the United States, Japan, and China, the target to reduce the current mortality rate of 7.7 per 1,000 live births to 5.5 by 2028 is achievable through preventive actions and treatment reflected in the national plan.

The actions include the introduction of the treatment of diseases, that are leading causes of infant mortality, using advanced technologies in the country, preventive measures aimed at averting the causes of premature birth, and early detection of infant diseases.
