French parliament adopts no-confidence motion against Barnier's government

AKIPRESS.COM - The National Assembly, the lower chamber of the French parliament, has voted to pass a motion of no confidence against the government of Michel Barnier, effectively ousting him.

"In accordance with the French Constitution, Michel Barnier is to submit his resignation letter to the president of the republic," Speaker Yael Braun-Pivet announced.

The motion was supported by 331 lawmakers, well above the required minimum of 289 votes.

The vote of no confidence will see the prime minister and the government resign. Barnier will remain acting prime minister until French President Emmanuel Macron chooses his successor.

The question of declaring a vote of no confidence in the government was put to a vote by members of the left-wing coalition New Popular Front and representatives of the far-right National Rally party.
