Kyrgyzstan pilots disaster risk assessment model to improve decisions on prevention, preparedness, and response

AKIPRESS.COM - The Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) have successfully piloted the INFORM model, a localized disaster risk assessment tool, with support from the Swiss government.

Designed to improve disaster preparedness, response, and risk reduction, this initiative strengthens national systems and enhances strategic planning for future emergencies.

During the pilot, the localized INFORM model was applied on the municipal level in the Suzak District of Jalal-Abad province, one of the most disaster-prone regions in the country. Covering all 13 rural municipalities (Aiyl Aimak), the model provided a holistic view of disaster risk for more than 300,000 residents.

The INFORM model provides comprehensive data on potential disasters in Suzak District, establishing a strong foundation for effective disaster management. By utilizing scientific risk assessments, the tool supports informed decision-making, identifying priority areas that require resources. This enables multiple stakeholders to coordinate efforts in anticipating, mitigating, and preparing for humanitarian emergencies.

The Government of the Kyrgyz Republic welcomed the results of the localized application of the INFORM model, recognizing its effectiveness. Plans are now underway to expand and further enhance this mechanism to strengthen disaster risk management.
