At least 300 people injured in Nairobi protests

AKIPRESS.COM - At least 300 people have been injured during protests in Kenya's capital, Nairobi, AFP reported.

67 individuals are in critical condition, including those with gunshot wounds. They have been sent to Jomo Kenyatta National Hospital.

Protests have affected over 20 cities in Kenya, with the most extensive demonstrations occurring in Nairobi, Daily Nation reported. Police and special forces used tear gas and water cannons to disperse protesters, and in some cases, firearms were employed.

The current protests coincide with the anniversary of the 2024 protests against tax increases and demanding the resignation of President William Ruto. The most significant demonstrations led to the arson of parliament and city council buildings in the capital on June 25, 2024. In response, the president withdrew the controversial bill and noted that the government would borrow up to 1 trillion Kenyan shillings (approximately $7.7 billion) from external markets.
