Mongolia to strengthen cooperation with Bhutan across all sectors

AKIPRESS.COM - The Inaugural Consultative Meeting between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia and Bhutan was held in Ulaanbaatar on August 7, Montsame reported.

The meeting was co-chaired by State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia Munkhtushig Lkhanaajav, and State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade of Bhutan Pema Choden.

At the outset, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia Munkhtushig Lkhanaajav underlined that Mongolia and Bhutan, as landlocked developing countries, have broad opportunities to intensify cooperation in all sectors by sharing development experiences and best practices. The State Secretary expressed Mongolia's commitment to deepening collaboration in such fields as the economy, agriculture, education, and healthcare.

State Secretary Pema Choden noted that the visit of King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck to Mongolia in 2024 was a historic event that strengthened the foundations of bilateral relations. Pema Choden emphasized that there are vast opportunities for the two sides to work together to realize the initiatives agreed upon by the heads of state.

The two sides highlighted that this first consultative meeting marked an important step in elevating the friendly and close relations between Mongolia and Bhutan to a new level. The sides agreed to institutionalize and regularly hold consultative meetings between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the two countries going forward.

A member of parliament and Deputy Head of the Mongolia-Bhutan Parliamentary Group Bayarmaanai Bayarbaatar, along with other group members, met with representatives of the Bhutan-Mongolia Parliamentary Friendship Group of the National Assembly of Bhutan on August 7.

King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck paid a state visit to Mongolia in July 2024 at the invitation of Mongolian President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh. During the state visit, the two sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in culture, education, agriculture, traditional medicine, and media.

The Deputy Head of the Mongolia-Bhutan Parliamentary Group noted that relations and cooperation between the governments and sectors of the two countries have been developing since the visit of representatives of the Bhutan-Mongolia Parliamentary Friendship Group from Bhutan to Mongolia in April 2025, and that the meetings have been fruitful.

The Deputy Head of the Group presented the legal reforms, policies, and operations currently being implemented by the Mongolian parliament, noting the importance of studying and localizing best practices in legislative bodies.

Delegation from Bhutan shared the country's policies, parliamentary structure, and activities. The parties exchanged views and outlined their positions.
