Talas region of Kyrgyzstan is bordered on the west and north by Kazakhstan, and on the southwest by Uzbekistan. It is basically a U-shaped valley open to the west.
The Talas River flows through the center of the valley. The main highway enters from the east over the OtmOk Pass and goes down the valley to Taraz in Kazakhstan.
Well-known Kyrgyz proverb says Talas is the valley of fighters. Indeed, Talas residents are notable for their boldness, courage and bravery. Many Olympic medalists, champions of the world, Eurasia and Asia are from Talas, including Kanatbek Begaliyev, Arsen Eraliyev, and many others.
